The World War II Memorial in Pensacola, Florida. My grandfather (who served in the war) was on the committee responsible for getting this set up; fortunately, all the hurricanes that came through left this alone. :salute:

I like the shot. My dad and father-in-law both served in WWII. I went on active duty in the Army as a freshly-minted Second Lieutenant (another way to be a freshman) just after Viet Nam.

The military was actually one possibility I looked at. Going to West Point and serving the country for a few years had some appeal, but having the next nine years of my life that, well, planned out for me seemed a bit too constricting. In the end, I decided that simply wasn't the path for me.

Of course, that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the services so many others have given to the nation. :-)

this photo means a lot to me; both of my grandfathers served in WW2. I have yet to see the memorial for myself, but I don't understand why it took so long to put this memorial together. This war meant a lot more to the world and the United States more than Vietnam ever could. Excellent photo.

Thanks. As for the monument's fairly recent construction: the city where this was built in was, until recently, fairly small. The few people living there were associated with the area's Naval Air Station and fairly young -- which also meant that there was fairly little money to spend on constructing something like this. As time has gone by, the population has aged and the area's location has attracted older couples. These new residents, like my grandparents, probably served (or at least remember living through) the war and actually had the money to pay for a monument.

I could ramble on and on, but I won't bore you :P I may update this post later with some of my grandfather's stories from the war; I'll have to wait and see.
